About Us

We are faculty and friends of the Department of Emergency Medicine at Hennepin County Medical Center (HCMC) in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Our Emergency Medicine residency program is one of the oldest and most respected in the country.

We are nationally and internationally recognized experts in Emergency Airway Management, Procedural Sedation, and Point-of-Care Ultrasound.

“Stab Room”  (pronounced “steyb room”) short for Stabilization Room, is the primary resuscitation area in the Emergency Department at HCMC. The Stab Room is one of the most prominent and unique features of the Department. It is the place where the most critically ill and injured patients are resuscitated. The concept of the Stab Room was invented by Dr. Ernest Ruiz, our first department chair and one of the Fathers of Emergency Medicine. The Stab Room incorporates the very best personnel, equipment and organizational teamwork, which are all crucial components of optimal resuscitation care. The Stab Room is known throughout the region and the world for providing the best resuscitation care and for some miraculous outcomes.
