Nerve blocks and regional anesthesia are commonly used to manage acutely painful conditions. These procedures are becoming commonplace in order to limit the use of opioid medications. “Single-shot” blocks using long acting anesthetics provide significant pain relief for patients. Continuous regional anesthesia using extended stay catheters and infusion pumps may offer ongoing pain control for up to 7 days. Applications for regional anesthesia are ever expanding, but it is challenging for busy clinicians to confidently learn these practical skills.
Topics covered in the Regional Anesthesia for Acute Care Providers course and lab sessions include:
- Introduce the general concepts of regional anesthesia
- Identify patients who will benefit from regional anesthesia
- Manage most acute painful conditions without opioids
- shoulder dislocations, wrist, femur, rib fractures and many more
- Safe and effective alternative to procedural sedation
- Discuss the risks and benefits of various nerve and plane blocks
- Review dosing, pharmacokinetics and systemic toxicity of local anesthetics
- Provide continuous regional anesthesia techniques
